Resumo O presente estudo comparou assembleias de peixes em duas áreas adjacentes, uma com algas à deriva (A) e outra ausente de algas (WA), a fim de avaliar as mudanças sazonais na sua diversidade e composição. Ambas as áreas estão localizadas na praia de São Cristóvão, Rio Grande do Norte, na região semiárida, costa Norte-Nordeste do Brasil. Um total de 4988 indivíduos foram capturados, sendo as famílias mais ricas em espécies Ariidae, Engraulidae e Carangidae. A riqueza de espécies e abundância foi ligeiramente superior no local A, e a diversidade e equitabilidade no local WA. No entanto, com exceção da equitabilidade, tais diferenças não foram significativas ao longo do estudo. A composição de espécies também foi semelhante entre os dois locais ao longo do ano. No entanto, apesar das semelhanças, as mudanças sazonais de condições ambientais, particularmente precipitação, influenciaram as assembleias de peixes de forma diferente nas duas áreas. Isto causou mudanças na estrutura das assembleias, ocasionando uma diferenciação das comunidades na estação seca. O presente estudo traz evidências de que as assembleias de peixes em habitats com e sem algas à deriva não são estáticos e podem se tornar mais semelhantes ou diferentes, dependendo das condições ambientais, sugerindo a existência de uma complexa relação entre produtividade primária, nível trófico e estrutura da assembleia.

Abstract The present study compared fish assemblages in two adjacent areas, one with drifting algae (A) and another without it (WA), in order to assess seasonal changes in diversity and composition. Both areas were located in São Cristóvão beach, Rio Grande do Norte state, on the semi-arid North-Northeastern coast of Brazil. A total of 4988 individuals were caught, the most species-rich families being Scianidae, Ariidae, Engraulidae and Carangidae. Species richness and abundance were slightly higher in site A, but diversity and evenness were higher in site WA. However, with the exception of evenness, such differences were not significant at any time during the study. Species composition was also similar between the two sites over the year. Nevertheless, in spite of the similarities, seasonal changes of environmental conditions, particularly rainfall, seemed to influence fish assemblages differently in the two areas. This may have led to changes in assemblage structure, causing the differentiation of the communities in the dry season. The present study presents evidence that fish assemblages in habitats with and without drifting seaweeds are not static and may become more similar or different, depending on the environmental conditions, suggesting that there is a complex relationship between primary productivity, trophic level and the structure of fish assemblages.

ABSTRACT For the demersal fish that inhabit sandy beaches, the variation between day and night periods represents a determinant factor in their behavior, especially for species that live in shallow waters. This research aims at determining whether there are differences in the fish assemblage structure of the sandy beach of São Cristóvão, RN, Brazil, between diurnal and nocturnal periods. Samplings were carried out in 2011, during spring high tide period, with an otter trawl net. Dissimilarity between diurnal and nocturnal fish assemblages was confirmed by PERMANOVA results. No statistical differences were observed for richness and diversity of fish assemblage between day and night periods. The first and third order carnivores were the significantly more representative trophic categories during night and day periods, respectively. Only four species presented significant differences regarding total length of fish between the periods. The demersal fish assemblage of São Cristóvão beach presented variations in the density of individuals between day and night periods. Dissimilarities were also recorded in trophic categories and in total lengths of individuals; however this occurred as a result of the high density of some species. The low depth of the beach may prevent the establishment of larger size adult fish, thus becoming a favourable environment for juveniles and small-sized fish species.

As espécies de peixes residentes e seu uso sazonal na zona de arrebentação foram caracterizados e identificados na praia de Jaguaribe, na Ilha de Itamaracá, estado de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil. As coletas foram mensais (março/2006 a fevereiro/2007), nas fases de lua nova e crescente, nos períodos diurno e noturno, com rede de arrasto do tipo picaré (20 m × 1,5 m × 5 mm), durante a baixa-mar. No total, foram coletados 6.407 exemplares pertencentes a 35 famílias e 90 espécies. Sete espécies foram consideradas residentes anuais (Anchoa tricolor, Anchoviella lepidentostole,Bairdiella ronchus, Larimus breviceps, Lycengraulis grossidens, Polydactylus virginicus e Pomadasys corvinaeformis), três residentes durante a estiagem (Conodon nobilis, Lile piquitinga e Menticirrhus americanus) e duas residentes na estação chuvosa (Cathorops spixii eNicholsina usta). Das 12 espécies analisadas, quanto ao estágio de vida, três delas (A. tricolor, C. spixii eL. piquitinga) apresentaram apenas indivíduos adultos, enquantoB. ronchus, M. americanus e N. usta foram as únicas representadas exclusivamente por jovens nas duas estações. A zona de arrebentação da Praia de Jaguaribe possui considerável importância ecológica, uma vez que engloba uma grande diversidade de peixes, incluindo espécies consideradas raras para este ecossistema, bem como espécies que são residentes anual ou sazonalmente. O padrão de distribuição das espécies registradas neste estudo demonstra que a ictiofauna da zona de arrebentação da praia de Jaguaribe é rica, dominada principalmente por indivíduos de pequeno tamanho, incluindo a fase juvenil de várias espécies, com a presença de algumas encontradas comumente em ambientes adjacentes, como banco de fanerógamas, estuários e recifes. Como um componente de ambientes interconectados em áreas costeiras de Pernambuco e por sua função no ciclo de vida de peixes costeiros, a zona de arrebentação da praia de Jaguaribe apresenta um padrão ecológico aparentemente comum em praias arenosas tropicais.

Resident fishes and their seasonal use of a surf zone were characterized and identified in the Jaguaribe beach, located on the Island of Itamaracá, state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Monthly towings (March 2006 to February 2007) with a beach seine net (20 m long, 1.5 m high, 5 mm mesh size) in different moon phases and periods of the day (day and night) were conducted. A total of 6,407 specimens, 35 families and 90 species were recorded. Seven species were considered as annual residents (Anchoa tricolor, Anchoviella lepidentostole, Bairdiella ronchus,Larimus breviceps, Lycengraulis grossidens, Polydactylus virginicus and Pomadasys corvinaeformis), three resident throughout the dry season (Conodon nobilis, Lile piquitinga andMenticirrhus americanus) and two resident species in the rainy period (Cathorops spixii and Nicholsina usta). Among these 12 species, concerning their life cycle, three of them (A. tricolor, C. spixii and L. piquitinga) showed only adult individuals, whileB. ronchus, M. americanus and N. usta were the only species represented exclusively by juvenile in both seasons. The surf zone of Jaguaribe beach presents a considerable ecological importance as it encompasses a great diversity of fishes, including species considered rare for this ecosystem, as well as species which are resident annually or seasonally. The distribution pattern of species found in this study shows that the ichthyofauna of the surf zone in Jaguaribe beach is rich, mainly dominated by small-sized individuals including juveniles of several species, with the presence of some species most commonly found in neighboring environments, such as seagrass beds, estuaries and reefs. As an integrated component of interconnected environments in coastal areas of Pernambuco, and owing to its function in the life cycle of coastal fishes, the surf zone of Jaguartibe beach presents an apparently common ecological pattern for tropical sandy beaches.

A pesca de arrasto de camarão produz mais descarte do que qualquer outra pescaria e captura uma grande quantidade de indivíduos imaturos. Esta pesquisa visa determinar a sustentabilidade da captura da ictiofauna acompanhante na pesca de arrasto de camarão. Cada espécie foi analisada de acordo com dois grupos de critérios: (1) vulnerabilidade à captura pela rede de arrasto e mortalidade ocasionada por esta pescaria; e (2) capacidade de recuperação da população para minimizar. Dentro de cada critério as espécies foram classificadas de 1 a 3, sendo 1 o valor mais alto, indicando que a espécie é altamente susceptível à captura ou tem baixa capacidade de recuperação. Um total de 8.894 indivíduos foram capturados, pertencendo a 28 famílias. As espécies com captura menos sustentável foram Stellifer rastrifer e Isopisthus parvipinnis. Estas espécies são altamente susceptíveis, pois são bentônicas ou demersais e suas dietas incluem organismos bentônicos. Chirocentrodon bleekerianus e Anchoa tricolor foram as espécies que apresentaram a captura mais sustentável. Por serem pelágicas, são menos susceptíveis à captura por arrastos de fundo, além disto, apresentaram uma grande capacidade de recuperação, pois a maior parte dos indivíduos capturados encontrava-se acima do seu tamanho de primeira maturação sexual. Devido à natureza multiespecífica da pescaria é difícil implementar medidas mitigatórias específicas. Assim, a criação de zona de exclusão de pesca deve ser considerada como a medida de manejo mais adequada.

The prawn fishery produces more discards than any other type of catch and captures a large quantity of immature individuals. This research aimed to assess the sustainability of capture of fish bycatch in prawn trawling. Each species was assessed according to two groups of criteria: (1) their relative vulnerability to capture by trawl and mortality due to this fishery (2) recovery capacity of the specie after a possible collapse of the population. Within each group, each species was ranked (1-3), being 1 the highest value, meaning the species is highly susceptible to capture or has a low resilience. A total of 8,894 individuals were caught, belonging to 28 families. The species with capture least sustainable were Stellifer rastriferand Isopisthus parvipinnis. These latter species are highly susceptible since they are either benthic or demersal, and their diet may include benthic organism. Chirocentrodon bleekerianus and Anchoa tricolor were the most likely fishes to be sustainable since they are pelagic, they are least susceptible to capture by trawls, and also have a greater capacity to recover, as most individuals have bred before capture. Due to the fishery's multi-specific nature, it is difficult to implement mitigation measures for specific species. Thus, the creation of fishing exclusion zones should be considered as the most appropriate management measure.

Um tipo de plataforma, conhecido como mesas, estão sendo utilizadas para o cultivo de ostras. Em Fortim, Ceará, este cultivo teve início em junho de 2000 e abrange uma área total de 50m² sobre um substrato argilo-arenoso. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo identificar e catalogar a ictiofauna colonizadora das mesas de cultivo de ostras do mangue (Crassostrea rhizophorae), avaliar aspectos ecológicos tais como as possíveis correlações de parâmetros físico-químicos da água com a ocorrência da ictiofauna, além de observar as diferenças na composição da mesma durante as variações de marés. Os exemplares foram identificados visualmente e quantificados empregando-se a técnica de censo visual por transecto de faixa. A ictiofauna avistada compreendeu 3.030 indivíduos pertencentes 28 espécies e 20 famílias. Das 28 espécies encontradas na área estudada, 14 são marinhas visitantes, 12 marinhas dependentes e apenas duas aparecem como residentes. Apenas 11 espécies apresentaram correlação com os parâmetros físico-químicos estudados. Com base nestes resultados, pode-se afirmar que as estruturas de cultivo da ostra do mangue funcionam como um recife artificial para a ictiofauna, sendo colonizadas por, no mínimo, 28 espécies de peixes, podendo fornecer abrigo, proteção contra predadores, alimento e área de reprodução.

A type of platform, known as a table, is now being used for mangrove oyster farming. In Fortim, Ceará, Brazil, this activity was begun in June 2000 and covers an area of 50 m² overlying a sand-clay substrate. The present study has the following main objectives: to identify and catalogue the ichthyofauna colonizing the Crassostrea rhizophorae farming platforms; to evaluate ecological aspects, such as the possible correlation between the physical and chemical variables for water quality and the occurrence of the ichthyofauna; and to observe the differences in the fish species found during tidal variations. Specimens were identified and quantified using the linear-transect, visual census methodology. The ichthyofauna observed comprised 3,030 individuals belonging to 28 species and 20 families. Of the 28 species found in the area studied, 14 were marine transients, 12 marine dependent, and only 2 permanent residents. A significant association was observed between the abundance of 11 species and the physical and chemical variables studied. Based on these results, it may be concluded that the platforms act as artificial reefs for the ichthyofauna, being colonized by at least 28 species, and providing protection from predators as well as a source of food and a reproductive substrate.
